It is estimated that close to 800,000 men, women and children are trafficked across international b ordinations each year. Many more are trafficked deep down their own countries. The enormous challenge that Africa faces in protecting tender-hearted rights is illustrated by the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) estimate that net from gay trafficking in West Africa are exceeded only by the trade in weapons and drugs (1). The most recognised definition of humans trafficking is found in the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, in particular Women and Children, Supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (2000) (2). It states that:The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or pass of persons, by means of the threat or use of take up or opposite forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control oer another person, for the purpose of evolution.



Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced churn or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs.The Protocol makes it clear that trafficking in persons infringes on several human rights set out by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including: the right to liberty of movement and freedom to choose ones abode; the right to decent work; the right to freedom from slavery; the right to not be tortured and/or submitted to other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or penalty; and the right to peace and security.
